So Uganda (like Nigeria, Russia and other backward thinking regimes) finally signed the law that consigns its gay citizens to the ghetto. Yes, let brimstone fall from angry heaven and devour those “disgusting” sexual deviants. It’s all for the children. When African and Russian leaders are busy looting their countries’ funds and salting them where those funds are protected by the West’s legislative framework these “leaders” are of course also thinking about the children: the children starved of funds that should be building, for them (I mean, the children), a better country.
Below are some quotes from Museveni’s gay-baiting speech showing the abysmal quality of leadership and thinking generally exhibited by African leaders and, let’s be frank, the religiously devout.
“Africans are flabbergasted by exhibitionism of sexual acts”.
He probably means disgusted. if instead they are ‘astonished’ what’s the issue?
“I am not able to understand the logic of the Western Culture … Since Western societies do not appreciate politeness”. He doesn’t understand except when he and his ministers are lining their pockets with aid money and stuffing stolen funds in western banks.
He then quotes a well-known Swedish study that surmises genes account for a third of the homosexuality in a sample of identical twins. For Museveni that proves being gay is a choice. We share 98% of our genes with chimpanzees and yet that errant 2% makes all the difference between being a chimp and being human. It doesn’t take much difference in genes to make a hell of a lot of difference in a living organism. Oops, not the kind of reasoning one expects from god-believers since they, out of hand, reject any science that conflicts with their holy books.
“let me .. warn our people publicly about the wrong practices indulged in and promoted by some of the outsiders. One of them is oral sex”. Apparently God doesn’t like this. Yes that mythical deity written up by some desert people a few thousand years ago and still believed in by billions of people. I am flabbergasted.
And then finally from Museveni:
“We reject the notion that somebody can be homosexual by choice; that a man can choose to love a fellow man; that sexual orientation is a matter of choice.”
What then is his problem? But then he goes on: “Since my original thesis that there may be people who are born homosexual has been disproved by science, …”
Really. What a buffoon.
“For us the concept of the sacred family remains one of the basic values of the company,” so said Guido Barilla, chairman of Italian pasta maker Barilla in a radio interview. “I would not [feature gay families in advertisements], but not out of a lack of respect for homosexuals who have the right to do what they want without bothering others… [but] I don’t see things like they do and I think the family that we speak to is a classic family.”
And if gay consumers don’t like it? “Eat another brand of pasta,” he said.
Ha! Not sure if he felt so strongly about homosexuals that he just had to blurt this out on national radio or if he was somehow led into this shocking pronouncement. You would think that as chairman of the world’s “largest pasta maker” he’d have more tact. After all, I bet his pasta is the besta in the Vatican. Or should that “is the best” be past-a tense.
No, it can’t be … but it’s unnatural … so it says in the Bible … the (fucking) Pope objects …. it’s a disgusting Western practice … not part of our (choose one: Black, Russian) customs … children are at risk for christ’s sake … it’s the end of civilisation … but god hates fags.
No, He doesn’t. People do. It’s self-evident that some Thing that does not exist cannot hate. But people can. Hatred is where ignorance meets prejudice. There are a lot of people who while demanding “rights” for themselves are very quick to deny it to others on the most fickle and stupid grounds like those mentioned in the preceding paragraph. It’s especially frustrating when it comes from Black people. With all the discrimination we’ve suffered too many of “our people” have their heads buried in ignorance and prejudice and a stupendous inability to see beyond conservative narrow mindedness. We have gone straight from the embrace of voodoo into the bosoms of fanatical Christian and Islamic religious bigotry.
Freedom is not the right to govern one’s own country. Let’s be frank here, African and Black Caribbean nations have been independent for a long time and what a glorious record of self-governance they have. Freedom however is a mind thing: the unshackling of superstition and convention and the putting on of courage: the courage to question and to form one’s opinions and then conduct one’s affairs based on careful observation and contemplation rather than simply folding into the consensus. This doesn’t mean an end result where everybody is accepting of homosexuality. It’s impossible to create a world where we all think alike – evolution won’t allow it. But it will mean far fewer people keen to lynch others (or think it’s OK to do so); far more people empathetic with their neighbour and a world that is less stressful and certainly more enjoyable and productive.
So yes, there may be a black US president; and black slavery may be a distant memory; and black people might be able to sit on the bus when whites are around but “free, free at last” we certainly are not. At least not yet. And until we are free, in our minds and in our thinking, we are likely to remain at the bottom of the pile, where we have historically been found.
Three of the arguments used by christians against marriage equality are:
(1) It will lead to bestial marriages. Let’s just say this is a crazy notion and very unlikely. Marriage is between consenting (human) adults. It’s unclear how one is going to get a cat or a donkey or a dolphin to consent to spending its life in a romantic relationship with a human being.
(2) It will lead to polygamy. My answer is: “And?”. Polygamy was legal in and practised by many societies before christianity came along. Let’s not forget two of christians’ favourite biblical characters, Kings David and Solomon, both had several wives/concubines. There is nowhere in the Bible where God complains about this. God was not even critical of Abraham sleeping with his maidservant even though he was past eighty and already had a wife!
(3) It will lead to the end of the world. I thought that was what all christians were praying for!! Aren’t they fed up with this world already?
In the middle of Rome, probably the most monumental city ever built, is probably the most farcical city ever known, the Vatican City. A city run by a professional homosexual clergy to whom one billion straight catholics defer, cross their hearts and bow piously. The same catholics who, in secular mode, are quick to denounce homosexuals. I do ponder the sheer silliness of it all.
PS Raphael’s paintings in the Raphael Stanze and Michaelangelo’s in the Sistine Chapel are awe-mazing.
PPS Despite the clear signs in the Sistine Chapel not to take photos, flashlights went off continuously. I guess catholics are used to ignoring the Holy See.
