Thucydides: Histories – 1

Finally, I plunged and decided to read this. It looked too heavy and I was fretful. I’ve just finished Book 1 and I’m breathless. No doubt some of it’s been made up especially the speeches but if people spoke even a little like this then, then we are barbarians. Every politician should be made, no forced, to read Book 1 and pass an exam on it before taking office. Perhaps then we’ll get more intelligence, more verve, more breadth, more wisdom and much less warmongering.
